Lord Metcalfe was greatly popular in India and won admiration from both Indians and Europeans. To honour him a meeting was held at the Town Hall on 18 february 1832. It was suggested a public building named 'Metcalfe Hall' will be erected. The ground floor was to be dedicated to a museum and committee rooms of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society and the upper floor to the Calcutta Public Library. The foundation stone of Metcalfe Hall was laid on 19 December 1840 in the presence of Lord Auckland, his sisters Emily and Fanny Eden, and Council members. It was completed in 1844. Tommorow I shall tell about the architecture of this splendid building which looks like a Greek temple.
